Nana gave Freiburger FC the lead after only six minutes and Brian Deane equalized for United at the twenty-five minute mark, only for Hausen to regain the lead for the German side, from the penalty spot, six minutes later. After forty minutes Carlton Palmer replaced Mark Tinkler at Inside Right. The game was seven minutes into the second half before Deane got his second goal to bring United on level terms once more. United made a double substitution after seventy minutes with Lee Bowyer coming on at Outside Right for Jason Blunt and Ian Rush taking over at Centre Forward from Tony Yeboah. The move paid dividends as the new United Captain quickly scored twice in the seventy-eighth and eightieth minutes to win the game for Leeds. Rod Wallace replaced Ian Harte after eighty minutes and Gary Kelly was brought on in the eighty-second minute to shore up the defence at the expense of Brian Deane and ensure their safe passage into the Final. Mark Beeney was the unused substitute. For Freiburg FC, Saggiomo came on for Nana after fifty-four minutes, Silvanus for D'Ambrosia after sixty-two minutes, Samy for Baier after seventy-five minutes, Seibert for Hillen after eighty minutes and Weid for Vella after eighty-one minutes. The Referee was Rosler of Pfullendorf.
